 Marigolds

Info  & taking care of Your Marigolds

Marigolds make excellent cut flowers for both live and dried arrangements.  For live bouquets the best time to cut the blossom is early in the morning and then immediately set the stems in warm water.  Later, strip the stems of the lower leaves that might sit in the water.  Then arrange the flowers in a vase with fresh water.  Marigolds will last up to a week, even longer if you add some floral preservative to the water.

Marigolds are great for dried arrangements and even all types of floral crafts. Cut perfect blossoms at their peak; remove foliage from stems, and hang upside down in a warm, dry place till dry. They will shrink a bit but their color will still stay vibrant.  Insert wire into the stems if you need support.

Being used for indoor arrangements are great but they do give off a pungent odor that is sometimes too strong for indoors. So be aware of where you put the arrangement unless you enjoy their smell!

You can grow Marigolds in pots and containers indoors, then transplant them outdoors.  This will allow you to make the proper spacing without the need for thinning the seedlings later on.

Plant your Marigold seeds early in the season after the last frost date for your area.  Usually around April.  The  Marigolds begin flowering in June and continue flowering until frost.

Once your Marigolds are established they should do very well even if left attended once in awhile, for they are a non fussy plant.

Marigolds are an annual that can add color to any garden. You can choose from a wide range of colors and sizes. The colors include orange, yellow, mahogany, crimson, some bi colors and even white.

The seeds that I'll be sending out are mostly of the yellow, orange and mahogany, bi colors (orange and crimson). A good mixture. Sorry can't give you any one color.

I'm sure you'll enjoy all the colors of the mix that you'll get with each packet.

Happy gardening and have fun. Thats what it's all about and you'll get a beautiful yard out of it too.

Marigolds in other Countries

A lot of  people think of the Marigold as a common, humble, dull, pathetic flower.  A flower to be planted in straight lines in the summer garden.  In India and Nepal, offerings of Marigolds fill shrine niches and drape figures of Hindu gods.  Marigold garlands, both fresh and dried, hang in swags on houses and businesses.  They collect them in the cracks on the streets, adorn weddings, and accompany the dead.
